Job Description
Role Overview:
The outline below describes the role and responsibilities associated with the Operations Manager, Laboratory R&D position for Carbon Upcycling Technologies.
The role includes operations, maintenance, quality control, and safety duties at the Carbon Upcycling Technologies NYSERDA Laboratory related to activities of material production, quality control, supply chain management, evaluation, material inventory, and laboratory maintenance.
Responsibilities:
Safety
1. Create and maintain safety protocols for all primary and auxiliary equipment at either sites, including general safety protocols for potential contractors present onsite a. Review and update protocols at least once a quarter or as necessary
2. Hold weekly safety meetings with staff
3. Report any safety concerns to management immediately upon concern or incident
4. Report monthly to management on operational safety status
Operations
1. Ensure the site provides a safe and clean environment
2. Provide quality oversight of facility and laboratory activities through approvals of: operation records/daily logs, standard operating procedures, change indications/controls, deviations, and corrective/preventative actions
2. Operate the Carbon Upcycling Technology equipment for material treatment & testing. a. Operate any necessary pre-treatment equipment for activities such as drying and/or crushing etc.
3. Manage treatment & testing protocols to ensure accurate processing and data collection
4. Manage weekly log sheets to record operational run times, run conditions, and personnel managing the operation of the equipment, including the laborer, lab technicians, and others associated with operations
5. Perform and manage QA review and approval of Quality, Treatment, & Testing SOPs and batch records
6. Oversee shipping & receiving of raw material feedstock & treated materials, as required
7. Manage the installation and commissioning of new equipment
8. Serve as primary liaison with leaseholders onsite
Maintenance
1. Maintain the Carbon Upcycling Technologies reactor mills and testing equipment for continual use
2. Maintain associated auxiliary equipment for safe operation, including but not limited to the furnace, ventilation fans, lighting, housing structures, control panels, etc.
3. Conduct, at a minimum, bi-weekly inspections of all primary equipment
4. Conduct monthly reviews of all auxiliary equipment
5. Repair and rehabilitate any broken equipment to reduce downtime. This includes contacting external vendors specialized in certain repairs to repair equipment. In this situation, the role demands:
a. Contact with the office (CEO or, if the CEO is unavailable, the Director) to report the problem immediately and create a record of the repair
b. Contact multiple vendors and consultants, as required, to determine various options
c. Convening with management to determine the optimal course of action and carrying out the repair in an expeditious and safe manner
Personnel Management
1. Manage personnel as required to carry out operations onsite, including hiring/dismissal
2. Manage treatment and testing activities including Quality Assurance Program
3. Provide, at minimum, weekly operations report to management
4. Ensure all personnel operating certain equipment have the requisite training, certification, safety equipment and PPE, and have the appropriate hands-on experience to conduct the work assigned to them 5. Maintain contact with all personnel working onsite, including:
a. Notifications, via text or email, when anyone is present onsite in the Operations Manager’s absence
b. Serve as the primary point of contact for any operations personnel in the event of an incident
c. Solicit feedback every week on safety, operation, or maintenance concerns by the staff
d. Conduct quarterly meetings to review all operations and maintenance protocols with equipment operators to ensure protocols are being followed
e. Review weekly log sheets from all technicians and support staff
f. Work with office personnel to get support as required
Qualifications:
● Undergraduate degree in Material Science, Engineering (Civil/Chemical/Mechanical) or 5+ years direct, relevant experience in a laboratory/manufacturing environment to provide a comparable background
● Minimum of 4 years experience in a manufacturing and/or R&D laboratory environment
● Experience in manufacturing, maintenance, and personnel management
● Highly motivated and energetic self-starter
● Operational experience in industrial facility and/or laboratory environments
● Trade experience in mechanics, and construction a plus
● Experience in equipment operation and maintenance
● Safety focused
● First Aid trained or willing to obtain certification
● Experience leading and managing a team of skilled laborers
● Able to operate in a fast-paced environment
● Excellent communication skills
● Punctual, reliable and responsible
● Basic computer skills including Excel and Word is an asset
● Language: English
