The Climate Tech Companies to Watch This Month: June Week 3

In this monthly series, we will be doing a weekly feature of incredible ClimateTech Startups, companies, or projects that are leading the fight against the Climate Crisis.

We will be presenting 1 company from each of the 5 predefined main industry categories such as; EDUTECH, FINTECH, GREENTECH (including Energy and Transportation), FOOD & AG TECH, and CONSTRUTECH.

It will give you an opportunity to better understand the problem(s) they solve, the impact they are looking to have in the climate fight, and how you can potentially help them.

This initiative from Startup Basecamp aims to support founders by giving them access to networking and exposure opportunities that help them to scale and finance their Climate Tech solutions together with you.

Do not hesitate to join our collective movement by requesting your membership.

Week #3:

ENERGY STARTUPS:

1.Raptor Maps

 Founded: 2015, Somerville, Massachusetts

Founders:
Nikhil Vadhavkar, Eddie Obropta

Elevator Pitch:
Raptor Maps helps key players in the solar industry to scale efficiently using drones and Software & Aerial Inspection Services to provide accurate production analysis.

Problem They Solve:
Solar-powered energy systems are a powerful tool in the fight against climate change. To optimize solar energy production, however, systems need to maximize their energy outputs and ensure the systems operate as effectively as possible.

Amount Raised:
Series A, US $5M

Impact:
Raptor maps manage the whole lifecycle of the solar system. Their software enables teams to convert data collected through aerial inspections and on-site sensors into accurate, high-value system analytics and reports. They support the entire solar stack across six continents, to identify and localize anomalies that affect energy production.

FOODTECH:

2.Heura

Founded:
2017, Spain, Barcelona

Founders:
Mark Coloma, Bernat Añaños

Elevator Pitch:
Heura is a Spanish Plant-Based food startup aiming to reduce meat dependence and create short-label, highly nutritious, and tasty Mediterranean-inspired food.

Problem They Solve:
Meat consumption worldwide has tripled since the 1960’s. Growing and raising cattle uses huge amounts of water and land every year and contributes to more GHG’s than transportation. As populations expand, it is becoming increasingly urgent to find ways to feed people in a way that is nutritious and sustainable.

Impact:
Heura has created meat substitutes of chicken and veal that taste like and look like meat products.  These substitutes can be incorporated into Spanish, and global recipes, making meat-free cooking accessible, sustainable and delicious.

Amount Raised:
US $5.1M

ENERGY STARTUPS:

3.Blackburn energy

Founded:
2014, US, Massachusetts

Founder:
Andrew Amigo

Elevator Pitch:
Blackburn Energy has developed the RelGen™, a Hybrid Charging solution to turn heavy trucks into mobile charging platforms.

Problem They Solve:
Blackburn identified that fleets who want to run on 100% clean electricity need to use auxiliary batteries to run the ENTIRE  load and ensure driver comfort. This means batteries need to be consistently charged to 100%, reduce operational costs, and have safely placed outlets.

Impact:
Blackburn’s kinetic energy recovery system (KERS) generates, captures and stores otherwise wasted energy – 5X more energy than standard truck alternators. This allows long-haul drivers and liftgate operators to reduce fuel consumption and maintenance costs that occur from engine idling. This benefits both fleet owners who increase uptime and profit margins, and the planet that loses up to 17 tons of CO2 per truck each year.

Amount Raised:
Seed, US $2.4M

CIRCULAR ECONOMY STARTUPS:

4.Lizee

Founded: 2019, Paris

Founders:
Anna Balez, Tanguy Frecon, Timothy Emery

Elevator Pitch:
Lizee reduces the impact of brands and retailers by encouraging circular rental models over ownership.

Problem They Solve:
Lizee identified that today’s retail industry model is one of the most polluting industries in the world, but that consumers are eager to change their habits. They discovered that in order for brands and retailers to act, circular business models like rentals need to be encouraged and easy to apply.

Impact:
Lizee help brands and retailers tackle the challenges found when adopting circular models such as; optimizing e-commerce sites, handling picking, packing, shipping and payments for rented products, quality checking returned products & refurbishing

Amount Raised: Seed, US $1.1M

WASTE MGMT STARTUPS:

5.Bloom Biorenewables Ltd

Location:
2019, Switzerland, Marly, Fribourg

Founders: Florent Héroguel, Remy Buser

Elevator Pitch:
Bloom Biorenewables offer an alternative to petroleum based products by utilizing deconstructed biomass.

Problem They Solve:
Petroleum products form a large part of our economy and it is estimated that 6,000 everyday products are refined from and/or manufactured with natural gas liquids and crude oil. As fossil fuels, their combustion contributes to large amounts of CO2.

Impact:
Bloom Biorenewables create technologies to manufacture chemicals and fuels from plant material. The biorefining technologies allow the industry to produce, at scale, a number of products such as fine chemicals, bulk chemicals, polyester and composites, fibers, fuels & fuel additives.  All of these could possibly eliminate our dependence on petroleum and create a clean, greener, chemical industry.

Amount They Raised:
Seed, US $4M
