Week 3:

GHG Capture, Storage & Tracking Startups:

1. Cascadia Carbon Inc.

 Founded: 2019, Vancouver, BC, Canada

Founder & CEO:
Alex Wick

Elevator Pitch:
Cascadia has developed a low-carbon blockchain that allows individuals and enterprises to exchange tokens backed by offset or sequestered carbon.

Problem They Solve:
Cascadia has found that todays carbon offset market is too exclusive to governments and large for- and non-profit corporations. Furthermore, the transaction process can be unmanageable, unclear, and is often at risk of being fraudulent.

Impact:
Cascadia’s product, CODEX, uses a platform marketplace to allow individuals and corporations to buy, or crowdsource carbon offsets. Crowdsourcing can be done by choosing more ecologically-conscious alternatives for their daily transportation. These transaction records are documented on blockchain making them secure, traceable, transparent and verifiable.

2.Carbon Cancel

2019, Amsterdam, Noord Holland

Founders:
Julian Swinkels, Raúl van Kleef,  Ruben Van De Water, Falko Lavitt

Elevator Pitch:
Carbon Cancel has developed a carbon calculator that analyses, reduces and offsets carbon emissions.

Problem They Solve:
Unique lifestyle choices result in unique CO2 emissions. Because of this, it is important to have a tool that tracks the impact specific to your decisions, and allows you to act in accordance with it.

Impact:
Carbon Cancels free carbon calculator allows you to see where your emissions are coming from. With an affordable subscription you can then support certified projects, that reduce carbon-emissions and foster local development.

3. SALUBATA

Founded:
2018, Nigeria & Delaware US

Founders:
Fela Buyi & Omokanye Adetona

Elevator Pitch:
Salubata produce modular footwear knitted from plastic wastes.

Problem They Solve:
According to Salubata, the average person produces 0.5kg of plastic waste per day, roughly the same weight as a pair of shoes (between 0.3 and 0.5kg). Salubata aim to upcycle the plastic waste into lightweight, fashionable footwear in an attempt to divert it from landfills and elsewhere.

Impact:
Salubatas footwear are not only environmentally friendly, but they come with detachable uppers that can be exchanged for other colors. This gives you more footwear options for less materials, less waste, and less cost. Their lightweight knit also makes them easier to transport & more breathable.

4. Applied BioPlastics

Founded:
2019, Austin, TX

Founders:
Colin Ardern & Alex Blum

Elevator Pitch:
Applied Bioplastics reduce the carbon footprint of durable plastic goods without changing the price or method of production.

Problem They Solve:
The pollution produced in the manufacturing, useage, and disposal of plastics is a huge cost to the planet. Whilst solutions do exist, many of them are an expensive and uncommon solution to traditional fossil fuel based plastic.

Impact:
Applied Bioplastics supplies economically sustainable plant-based plastic alternatives. Their wide variety of products reduce petroleum dependency, pollution, and habitat destruction. Through their supply chains, they also support eco-friendly agriculture in developing countries.

Stage: Seed

Aclymate has found that investing in climate emission reductions yields an average financial return of 57%. Furthermore, 73% of consumers would avoid purchasing from a company that doesn’t address its climate impacts, making environmental action a key concern for many businesses.

Impact:
