The Climate Tech Startups to Watch: July Week 4

July Week 4, 2024: In this weekly series, we highlight 5 climate tech startups to watch by featuring the incredible startups, companies, or projects that are leading the fight against the climate crisis.

Each month, we add these startups to our running list, which we have categorized based on fuel emission sector data from the most detailed, recent data SBC could identify from the World Resource Institute in 2016.

This initiative from Startup Basecamp aims to support founders by giving them access to networking and exposure opportunities that help them to scale and finance their climate tech solutions.

Founded: 2024 – London, UK

Founder: Graeme Allen & Flo Mînzat

Elevator Pitch: EcothermiQ provides innovative, easy-to-integrate, low-carbon technology that uses passive principles to promote indoor thermal comfort and wellbeing, and improves the energy efficiency of homes.

Problem they solve: Heating, cooling, and ventilation account for 30% of global energy consumption, and the shift to electrified heating combined with rising temperatures is straining our energy infrastructure. This leads to higher electricity costs due to increased demand and the need for significant upgrades to the energy grid. These factors disrupt the energy balance, making it difficult for many households to afford adequate heating, which in turn can lead to reduced quality of life and increased vulnerability during extreme weather conditions. Without action to address temperature regulation in homes, the frequency and severity of temperature-related health issues are expected to increase significantly in the coming decades.

Impact: EcothermiQ’s technology reduces energy consumption, lowers greenhouse gas emissions, and promotes healthier living environments by leveraging passive heating and cooling techniques.

Stage: Early Stage

Founded: 2016 – Lenoir City, USA

Founder: Tony Bova

Elevator Pitch: Mobius is transforming waste into wonder by leveraging industrial organic waste streams to create new materials and chemicals. Their first product is a biodegradable polymer made from lignin, a natural byproduct of the paper and biofuel industries.

Problem they solve: Mobius addresses the massive issue of waste generated by agriculture, forestry, and biorefining industries, which produces over 50 million tons of lignin annually. They turn this waste into valuable, sustainable materials.

Impact: Mobius’ biodegradable polymer reduces reliance on traditional plastics, offering eco-friendly solutions for horticulture, agriculture, and packaging, thereby promoting a circular economy.

Stage: Seed.
