The Climate Tech Startups to Watch This Month: August Week 1

August Week 1, 2023: In this monthly series, we highlight 5 climate tech startups to watch by featuring the incredible startups, companies, or projects that are leading the fight against the climate crisis.

Each month, we add these startups to our running list, which we have categorized based on fuel emission sector data from the most detailed, recent data SBC could identify from the World Resource Institute in 2016.

This initiative from Startup Basecamp aims to support founders by giving them access to networking and exposure opportunities that help them to scale and finance their climate tech solutions.

Do not hesitate to join our collective movement by requesting your membership.

Founded:
2022 – Rehovot, Israel

Founders: Ophira Melamed and Meital Alon

Elevator Pitch:
Generating Ammonia with Zero Carbon Emission

Problem they solve:
Ammonia is the second-largest global chemical product. It is being used mainly for agricultural fertilizers (80%), but also as industrial materials, refrigerants, and additives.
Recently, the utilization of ammonia as the energy carrier (secondary energy source) has attracted many interests.

The current production method of ammonia emits 1.8% of the total CO2 emission!!!

Impact:
NitroFix developed an innovative production method, which emits Zero CO2. The process is based on an electrochemical reaction and is facilitated by a novel catalyst.
The process uses nitrogen and water as reactants and is performed under ambient conditions with low over-potentials.
Can be utilized in small, medium, or large facilities, using renewable energy to operate.

Stage:
Series A

Founded:
2021 – London, UK

Leadership:
Nestor Rueda-Vallejo and Louise Parlons Bentata

Elevator Pitch:
Fighting climate change by capturing methane from water to create a new source of bio-power.

Problem they solve:

51 B tonnes of greenhouse gases are emitted by people every year. Three billion are from methane escaping from water. We develop technologies to remove methane from water permanently.

Although the threat has been invisible, stemming methane leaks from reservoirs, rice paddies, and wastewater could be one of the most powerful instruments to quickly slow global warming. Some sources of methane seem unusual, like from water. Below is a brief explanation of how methane is rapidly escaping to the atmosphere from sources of water across the globe.

Microbes break down organic material that contains carbon. Without much oxygen, this process produces methane. This methane is transferred to our atmosphere through three different processes: Bubbling, diffusion and degassing.
prevent its escape to the atmosphere, in turn creating a new source of renewable energy.

Bluemethane is developing technology to sense and capture methane emissions from water, as a new source of data, power and revenue for the asset owner. This will permanently remove methane from water, reduce global warming and support the energy transition by unlocking a new source of energy. Bluemethane will start with hydropower plants and scale to non-hydropower reservoirs, wastewater treatment, and ultimately, natural bodies of water.

Bluemethane patent-pending technology captures and profitably uses methane emissions from freshwater, enabling up to 660mt C02e to be captured when deployed at scale.
