Climate tech startups to watch January week 2 2023

The Climate Tech Startups to Watch This Month: January Week 2

January Week 2, 2023: In this monthly series, we highlight 5 climate tech startups to watch by featuring the incredible startups, companies, or projects that are leading the fight against the climate crisis.

Each month, we add these startups to our running list, which we have categorized based on fuel emission sector data from the most detailed, recent data SBC could identify from the World Resource Institute in 2016.

This initiative from Startup Basecamp aims to support founders by giving them access to networking and exposure opportunities that help them to scale and finance their climate tech solutions.

MortarIO cover

Founded:
2022 – London, UK

Founders:
Josephine Bromley, Ranjeet Bhalerao, and Ruggiero Guida

Elevator Pitch:
Mortar IO is on a mission to supercharge and de-risk retrofits.

Problem they solve:
Buildings are responsible for 40% of carbon emissions globally. This is more than every single car, train and plane on the planet. Considering that 80% of the buildings that will be standing in 2050 are already built, decarbonising existing buildings is the true problem to solve. Mortar IO’s breakthrough technology helps organisations understand how to achieve net zero for entire portfolios in minutes, rather than months.

Impact:
Catalysing retrofits will unlock an accelerated path to net zero for every building, helping us to secure the health and happiness of our planet.

Stage:
Pre-seed

Dovetail Aeroplane

Founded:
2021 – Rose Bay, NSW, Australia

Founders:
David Doral and Aaron Shaw

Elevator Pitch:
Dovetail Electric Aviation is leading the regional and general aviation industry into an exciting new, sustainable era by enabling aviation operators to fly commercially viable regional routes in nil emission, electric powered aircraft.

Problem they solve:
Dovetail’s propulsion is 100% electric, no need for an aircraft to burn Avgas or Jet A1 fuel.

Impact:
The electrification of aviation has the potential to abate more than 50 million CO2 tonnes globally, equivalent to the emissions of flights <500km. We will abate 1M tonnes of CO2 p.a. after 5 years of operation, or 2% of the global regional aviation emissions.

Stage:
Seed

Founded:
2014 – Calgary, Canada

Leadership:
Apoorv Sinha, Madison Savilow, and Ryan Bourns

Elevator Pitch:
Carbon Upcycling is a waste and carbon utilization company unlocking a new frontier of circular materials.

Problem they solve:
Our first massive market is cement and concrete, the source of eight percent of global CO2 emissions and growing. Our technology sequesters industrial CO2, reduces the carbon footprint of cement, and improves concrete performance. We do this by opening up a new class of locally available, carbon-sequestering cement replacements.

With Carbon Upcycling, cement and concrete producers can now create a superior product using local industrial byproducts and natural materials and save the planet at the same time.

Impact:
We’re tackling the biggest problems on the planet—like climate change and industrial waste. With our patented technology platform, we help hard-to-decarbonize industry transform local industrial byproducts and natural materials into superior additives.

Stage:
Series A

Founded:
2020 –  Los Angeles, CA, USA

Founders:
Mac Kennedy and Joshuah Stolaroff

Elevator Pitch:
Mote uses wood waste to remove carbon from the air and produce clean hydrogen.

Problem they solve:
Wood waste absorbs energy and carbon via photosynthesis. Our technology removes the carbon and turns the rest into hydrogen.

Impact:
We improve local air quality by using direct gasification and other clean processes. We displace emissions from field burning and landfilling, and help reduce wildfire risk.

Stage:
Series A

Location:
2022 – Innsbruck, Austria

Founder:
Roger Lewis

Elevator Pitch:
SpiralBeam is building next generation giga-scale CO2 removal.

Problem They Solve:
We change excess atmospheric CO2 into lunch for trillions of microorganisms. We tokenize the value of extracted carbon digitally using blockchain and robust measurements.

Impact:
SpiralBeam has created a cold-plasma technology that takes CO2 Directly out of air without any sequestration costs.

Stage:
Pre-seed
