5 climate tech startups to watch March week 2

The Climate Tech Startups to Watch This Month: March Week 2

March Week 2, 2023: In this monthly series, we highlight 5 climate tech startups to watch by featuring the incredible startups, companies, or projects that are leading the fight against the climate crisis.

Each month, we add these startups to our running list, which we have categorized based on fuel emission sector data from the most detailed, recent data SBC could identify from the World Resource Institute in 2016.

This initiative from Startup Basecamp aims to support founders by giving them access to networking and exposure opportunities that help them to scale and finance their climate tech solutions.

Founded:
2021 – Bremen, Germany

Founders:
Wei Wu and Niklas Friese

Elevator Pitch:
Heatrix decarbonizes high-temperature industrial heat

Problem they solve:
The Heatrix system combines an electric heater, utilizing off-grid solar or wind electricity, with a thermal energy storage to provide continuous high-temperature process heat. With an outlet temperature of up to 1500 °C, Heatrix has the potential to decarbonize the majority of high emission industries.

Impact:
Our mission is to competitively replace fossil fuels in energy-intensive industries by converting renewable electricity into storable, high-temperature process heat.

Stage:
Pre-seed

Founded:
2021 – New York, NY, USA

Founders:
Edward Shenderovich and Joshua Lachter

Elevator Pitch:
Synonym is a financing and development platform for essential biomanufacturing infrastructure.

Problem they solve:
We provide synthetic biology (synbio) producers – from startups to the Fortune 500 – with flexible production capacity while giving infrastructure investors access to a new, carbon-negative biomanufacturing asset class that we are calling “fermentation farms”.

Impact:
Our global economy is undergoing a major shift across industries and our global infrastructure footprint needs to undergo a radical transformation to support a more sustainable future. Biomanufacturing offers a platform for creation and will address several global challenges.

Founded:
2022 – Singapore

Founder:
Rishita Changede

Elevator Pitch:
TeOra is rapidly designing smart microbes to solve the largest problem of this decade

Problem they solve:
Using nothing but easily available natural resources, we leverage Nature’s biofactories. No more synthetic or unsustainable methods & processes.

TeOra takes on this global challenge and aims to lead the design & delivery of precision fermentation-based ingredients & proprietary biofactories.

When there is a blueprint available in Nature, TeOra aims to biomanufacture with it.

Impact:
Since we miniaturise our processes onto our proprietory microfluidics platform, we are more efficient than other incumbent technologies. Up to 100x times more. – Our miniaturised process replaces large equipment and cuts reagent costs by 90%. Each reaction is carried out as a tiny droplet which means 1,000,000x less plastic, sample and reagent wastage. Parallel processing reduces the time to identify successful biofactories by 10x, from months to a week.

GHG Capture, Use, and Storage

Image: www.biorecro.com

Founded:
2007 – Stockholm, Sweden

Founder:
Henrik Karlsson

Elevator Pitch:
We permanently remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Problem they solve:
Utilizing Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) technologies, we are able to capture carbon emissions from biomass, rather than from fossil fuels as is done with CCS.

Impact:
By naturally drawing carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere via biomass production and then permanently storing it thousands of meters below the Earth’s surface, BECCS is able to go beyond net zero, producing net negative emissions.

Stage:
Seed
