The Climate Tech Startups to Watch This Month: May Week 1

May Week 1, 2023: In this monthly series, we highlight 5 climate tech startups to watch by featuring the incredible startups, companies, or projects that are leading the fight against the climate crisis.

Each month, we add these startups to our running list, which we have categorized based on fuel emission sector data from the most detailed, recent data SBC could identify from the World Resource Institute in 2016.

This initiative from Startup Basecamp aims to support founders by giving them access to networking and exposure opportunities that help them to scale and finance their climate tech solutions.

Founded:
2022 – London, UK

Founders:
Mat Ilic, Richard Ng, and Sunil Suri

Elevator Pitch:
We’re a new climate EdTech startup that is tackling the green skills emergency and building the net-zero workforce.

Problem they solve:
30 million more green workers are needed globally by 2030 for us to reach net-zero and prevent catastrophic climate breakdown.

Without these workers, we won’t be able to build the critical green infrastructure that we need for renewable power, energy efficiency and electric vehicles.

Impact:
Our mission is to get 10 million people into green jobs in 10 years. We’re building an app to be the talent portal for green jobs: with green job discovery, opportunity-matching and social community.

Founded:
2021 – Rotterdam, Netherlands

Leadership:
Pol Knops, Marta Sjögren, Andreas Saari, and Jane Walerud

Elevator Pitch:
We re-store captured carbon into industrial raw materials.

Problem they solve:
Our technology was invented by nature. CO2 mineralisation is a natural process that turns carbon dioxide into stone – but as with most geological processes, it takes centuries. Based on 20 years of research, we have found a way to accelerate the process by a factor of more than a million, with minimal energy use. We combine captured carbon with abundant minerals to create a carbon-negative raw material.

Impact:
Paebbl’s modular technology is industrially scalable and can be integrated into any carbon capture system. As a result, we deliver a carbon-negative raw material stream that fundamentally changes the economics of keeping carbon away from our atmosphere.

5. UNDO

Undo solution explains enhanced rock weathering

Founded:
2022 – London, UK

Founder:
Jim Mann

Elevator Pitch:
UNDO develops pioneering carbon removal that can capture huge amounts of CO2 from our atmosphere.

Problem they solve:
We do enhanced rock weathering. And we do it with research that makes sure our technology is safe. We collect data and measure the carbon we remove.

Enhanced rock weathering is based on what nature’s been doing for millions of years. We just speed things up. So, CO2 can be locked away permanently, quickly and at scale – removing a billion tonnes this decade alone.

Impact:
We don’t just stop at removing CO2. We do more to help the environment and local communities. We also balance our purpose with profit. So we can ramp up investment and widen our impact.

Our ambition is to scale up enhanced weathering to remove CO2 quickly. We aim to remove a billion tonnes from our atmosphere by 2030.

We won’t stop until all is undone.
