The Climate Tech Startups to Watch This Month: May Week 2

May Week 1, 2023: In this monthly series, we highlight 5 climate tech startups to watch by featuring the incredible startups, companies, or projects that are leading the fight against the climate crisis.

Each month, we add these startups to our running list, which we have categorized based on fuel emission sector data from the most detailed, recent data SBC could identify from the World Resource Institute in 2016.

This initiative from Startup Basecamp aims to support founders by giving them access to networking and exposure opportunities that help them to scale and finance their climate tech solutions.

Energy use in Industry and Buildings

Image:https://www.linkedin.com/company/a-b-smart-materials/

Founded:
Oxford, UK

Founders:
Amaury van Trappen de Buggenoms and Benjamin White

Elevator Pitch:
A&B Smart Materials introduces a novel smart hydrogel material to passively cool PV panels.

Problem they solve:
Solar farms are missing out on up to 25% extra revenue due to overheating of PV panels (reaching 80°C). For this reason, PV panels require climate control to increase power output and extend their lifetime.

A&B Smart Materials introduces a novel smart hydrogel material that passively cools any surface it is applied to (IP filing in progress). The material is painted on the back of a solar panel and increases their efficiency. The hydrogel absorbs atmospheric water at night and releases it through evaporation during the day, cooling the solar panel during operating times.

Impact:
CarbonBright brings accurate and comprehensive product-level sustainability data to suppliers, retailers & brands in the Consumer Packaged Goods Industry, enabling transformation across supply chains to meet global demand for more sustainable products, while improving agility, resilience, and brand differentiation.
