The Climate Tech Startups to Watch This Month: October Week 2

October Week 2, 2023: In this monthly series, we highlight 5 climate tech startups to watch by featuring the incredible companies and projects that they are leading to fight climate change.

Each month, we add these startups to our running list, which we have categorized based on fuel emission sector data from the most detailed, recent data SBC could identify from the World Resource Institute in 2016.

This initiative from Startup Basecamp aims to support founders by giving them access to networking and exposure opportunities that help them to scale and finance their climate tech solutions.

Founded: 2015 – London, UK

Founders: Henrik Hagemann and Simon Foxon

Elevator Pitch: They protect environmental & human health by engineering targeted materials to capture chemicals.

Problem they solve: Puraffinity addresses the problem of removing specific pollutants or contaminants from water and air. Traditional methods for removing contaminants are often less selective and may remove both pollutants and essential elements, making the treatment process less efficient and potentially causing secondary pollution issues.

Impact: By selectively removing contaminants, Puraffinity’s approach can reduce the consumption of resources, such as energy and chemicals, compared to traditional treatment methods, which can have a positive impact on sustainability and environmental conservation.
Ultimately, Puraffinity’s work contributes to cleaner water and air, which can have a significant positive impact on the environment, human health, and ecosystems.

Stage: Series A.

Founded: 2016 – Vancouver, CA

Founders: Amielle Lake, Barry Yates and Michael Carlson

Elevator Pitch: Accelerating the world’s transition to recycled water: radical and unabashedly transformative, CarboNet will change the way you think about industrial wastewater treatment.

Problem they solve: As freshwater becomes increasingly scarce and regulated, companies from energy and mining to food and beauty turn to CarboNet to reduce, recycle, and renew the water they need to thrive.

Impact: 33 BILLION gallons of water treated annually, 4600 TONS CO2 emissions saved and 5 MILLION+ pounds of synthetic chemicals filtered.

Stage: Seed.

Founded: 2021 – London, UK

Founder: Matt Kennedy

Elevator Pitch: Again is the supply chain infrastructure powering circular packaging.

Problem they solve: They help brands to reduce their packaging waste by allowing them to reuse the same packaging again and again.

Impact:  Their decentralised network of cleaning tech enables brands to reuse packaging for the same price as single use. By 2025 they will create a world where reuse surpasses single use on every metric, saving billions of units of packaging from landfill/incineration.

Stage: Pre-Seed.

Founded: 2016 – London, UK

Founder: Ryan Robinson

Elevator Pitch: AeroPowder creates sustainable materials from waste feathers. These materials can be used for various applications, including insulation for buildings and packaging materials.

Problem they solve: Waste Feathers, as the poultry industry generates large quantities of waste feathers, which can be an environmental challenge if not managed effectively. Energy Efficiency: Inefficient insulation materials in buildings can lead to energy waste and increased greenhouse gas emissions.

Impact: AeroPowder’s technology repurposes waste feathers that would otherwise be discarded, reducing the environmental burden of poultry waste.

Stage: Pre-seed.

Founded: 2022 – London, UK

Founders: Peter Lehner and Rory Glover

Elevator Pitch: Climata helps lenders originate loans and HELOCs for homeowners who will benefit from solar, heat pumps and more.

Problem they solve: Many homeowners are interested in adopting green home technologies to reduce their environmental footprint and lower energy costs. However, they often lack access to accurate information about the potential savings and benefits associated with these technologies. This lack of information can result in hesitation or reluctance to invest in green home improvements, hindering the adoption of sustainable practices.

Impact: Homeowners who invest in green upgrades are contributing to a more sustainable future by reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions, which is an essential step in addressing climate change.

Stage: Pre-Seed.
