Every week, we feature 5 incredible climate tech startups, companies, or projects that are leading the fight against the climate crisis. Now at the end of this month of April 2024, we provide a recap of the startups to watch in climate tech.
These startups have covered a range of fast-growing industries such as AI, GHG Capture and monitoring, Energy production and storage, Fintech, Foodtech, Agtech, and much, much more.
The list below is a recap of all the startups we have featured over March with some insight into the innovative work they and their teams are doing.
We hope you find this resource useful and that you can refer back to it anytime you are looking for companies to support, invest in, work for, or collaborate with.
These startups are all added to our running list, which we have categorized based off of fuel emission sector from the most detailed, recent data SBC could identify from the World Resource Institute 2016.
Energy Use in Industry and BuildingS
Rebound Technologies – Week 1
Rebound Technologies has transformed cold chain logistics and frozen food processing with its innovative IcePoint® system. This technology introduces a groundbreaking freeze point suppression cycle that integrates agile freezing, advanced humidity control, and demand response capabilities.
GRYD Energy – Week 2
Creating a fair and shared smart energy network.
Novatron Fusion Group AB – Week 3
Fusion powering the sustainable planet.
Waste (Water & Landfills)
Novoloop – Week 1
Novoloop envisions a truly circular world without waste, where materials are the building blocks for new things. So instead of ending up in a landfill, hard-to-recycle plastics are remade into something better: an infinite loop of possibility. They call it Lifecycling™, and it’s their platform that uses almost any plastic waste to make performance materials that are molecularly identical to conventional products.
Bloom Labs – Week 4
Accelerating the world’s transition to a circular economy, by developing next-gen alternatives to fibers and plastics. Bloom Labs is pioneering breakthrough in material science by harnessing the value of natural waste by-products, a protein-rich and globally abundant raw material, to create high-performance alternatives to textile and plastic materials.
Energy use in Transport
Torev Motors – Week 1
Torev develops axial flux electric motors for the automotive and aerospace industries. They specialize in applications that require low weight and high power output while minimizing rare earth metal consumption.
GHG Capture, Use and Storage
Lithos Carbon – Week 2
Accelerating mineral weathering by spreading basalt on croplands to increase dissolved inorganic carbon with eventual storage as ocean carbonates. Their technology uses novel soil models and machine learning to maximize CO₂ removal while boosting crop growth. Addressing atmospheric CO2 levels and enhancing agricultural productivity simultaneously presents a significant challenge. Traditional carbon removal methods can be costly and inefficient, while improving soil health and crop resilience often involves environmentally harmful practices.
Divea – Week 3
Divea utilizes cutting-edge graphene membrane technology to capture CO2 directly from industrial processes. Their innovative approach involves installing specialized filters at emission sites to intercept and remove CO2 from flue gases before it reaches the atmosphere. This captured CO2 can then be stored permanently or repurposed into valuable by-products, making a significant dent in industrial emissions and advancing us towards a cleaner, sustainable future.
Emvolon – Week 4
Emvolon, an MIT spin-off, is propelling industries toward a zero-carbon future by transforming methane, CO2 emissions, and waste into valuable carbon-negative fuels and green chemicals such as methanol and ammonia. Utilizing patented technology that repurposes automotive engines for chemical processing, Emvolon offers an innovative solution that captures and converts onsite greenhouse gases into easily transportable, green liquid fuels.
Caidio – Week 4
Caidio is revolutionizing the concrete industry by leveraging data-driven technology to reduce costs, lower CO2 emissions, and enhance the quality of concrete production. As the world’s most used construction material, concrete plays a significant role in urbanization but also contributes to environmental challenges, accounting for 8% of global CO2 emissions and 10% of industrial water use. Caidio’s innovative solutions assist producers in navigating these issues by optimizing production processes and material usage, thus driving the industry towards a more sustainable and efficient future.
Cross-cutting enablers
FÆRM – Week 2
FÆRM is a food tech company that uses science to further traditional cheese production methods, creating the future of non-dairy products. They re-design plant-masses to achieve the well-known textures and flavors from cheese to create taste experiences – unlike anything you’ve had before.
Recoolit – Week 4
Recoolit is at the forefront of combating one of the most significant yet overlooked contributors to global warming: refrigerant emissions. With refrigerants being up to 2000 times more potent than CO2, their management is crucial for climate control. Recoolit leverages cutting-edge technology to provide sustainable cooling solutions, coordinating a network of partners for lifecycle refrigerant management.
