The Climate Tech Companies to Watch This Month: May Series Week 1

In this new monthly series, we will be doing a weekly feature of incredible ClimateTech Startups, companies, or projects that are leading the fight against the Climate Crisis.

We will be presenting 1 company from each of the 5 predefined main industry categories such as; EDUTECH, FINTECH, GREENTECH (including Energy and Transportation), FOOD & AG TECH, and CONSTRUTECH.

It will give you an opportunity to better understand the problem(s) they solve, the impact they are looking to have in the climate fight, and how you can potentially help them.

This initiative from Startup Basecamp aims to support founders by giving them access to networking and exposure opportunities that help them to scale and finance their Climate Tech solutions together with you.

Do not hesitate to join our collective movement by requesting your membership.

Week #1:

SPACETECH STARTUPS:

1. Zero Gravity

zero gravity

Founded: 2019, Finland, Espoo

Founder:
Olga Bodet

Elevator Pitch:
Zero gravity is a Space tech data company that develops products based on their findings in satellite imagery data. Their core product is Urban AI; a tool that aims to reshape urban mobility technologies.

Problem They Solve:
Urbanization poses many challenges to our natural environment. The areas are expanding into green spaces and roughly 2/3 of our population will live in urban spaces by 2050. These urban spaces consume roughly 76% of global energy and produce about three-quarters of global CO2 emissions. These areas are growing quickly and we need solutions to figure out how our population can move and navigate these spaces sustainably.

Impact:
Zero Gravity use earth observation data to build cities’ digital twin. This enables us to view the environmental impact, land usage, and mobility state of urban areas in the past, present, and future. The product also allows planners to see factors such as quality & green spaces which allows for better decision-making in green city development. Zero Gravity facilitates cities in reaching sustainable development goals such as carbon neutrality and decreased resource dependence.

Amount Raised:
Searching for funding: Round A.

FOODTECH STARTUPS:

2. Wild Earth

wild earth

Founded:
2017, US, California

Founder:
Ryan Bethencourt

Elevator Pitch:
Wild Earth is producing plant-based dog food that is better for your pets and less-harmful for the planet.

Problem They Solve:
Research from UCLA shows that Meat consumption by pets is responsible for 64 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year. Moreover, dogs need protein to grow healthily and beef sources only provide 24% per weight.

Impact:
Wild Earth uses a yeast-based protein that is 49% protein per weight-a much higher percentage than beef. The protein contains 10 essential amino acids and is far less resource-intensive than meat farming.

Amount Raised:
US $16.2M

EDTECH STARTUPS:

3. SeaTwirl

seatwirl

Founded:
2012, Sweden, Gothenburg

Founder: Peter Laurits

Elevator Pitch:
SeaTwirl is redesigning offshore wind turbines with a vertical axis to create simple, more cost-effective energy solutions.

Problem They Solve:
Traditional commercial offshore wind turbines are foundation-based turbines that operate on a horizontal axis. This limits them from operating in deep waters and with great mobility.

Impact:
SeaTwirl is developing floating turbines that, due to the lack of a foundation, can operate in deep areas, remote areas, and are able to be scaled at lower costs than traditional offshore turbines.

Amount Raised:
US $338.8K

GREENTECH STARTUPS:

4. Zauben

zauben

Founded: 2019, Chicago, US

Founder: Zachary S

Elevator Pitch:
Zauben is an architecture and planning company building living, green walls that you can monitor the health of on an app.

Problem They Solve:
Cities are responsible for holding 50% of the world’s population in 3 % of land space. At the same time, cities are also responsible for producing 70% of our CO2 Emissions. Zauben walls attempt to instill a relationship with nature in the cities and have a physical impact on it as well-being by cooling city temperatures.

Impact:
Zauben’s living walls use an aeroponic system that is more water-efficient than soiled plants. When combined with its smart monitoring technology, the walls are able to keep plants alive long term and can continuously purify the surrounding air.

CONSTRUCTECH STARTUPS:

5. 75F

75F

Founded: 2012, Minnesota, US

Founder: Deepinder Singh

Elevator Pitch:
75F is developing sensor-based systems that allow buildings to operate at lower costs, more energy efficiently, and with improved air quality.

Problem They Solve:
75F came about to address a need developed by the United Nations in 2008, when they launched a campaign to raise thermostats in their secretariat building from 70 to 75°F. This was done in an attempt to reduce carbon emissions that buildings produce through the use of heating and cooling systems

Impact:
75F uses cloud computing and the Internet of Things (IoT) to manage a range of building needs and controls. This includes balancing the airflow, making lighting energy efficient, managing air quality & balancing water chilling systems. These systems have proven to save an average customer savings of 41.8 percent in energy consumption and carbon footprint.

Amount Raised:
US$ 4.8M
