The Climate Tech Startups to Watch: June Week 2

June Week 2, 2024: In this weekly series, we highlight 5 climate tech startups to watch by featuring the incredible startups, companies, or projects that are leading the fight against the climate crisis.

Each month, we add these startups to our running list, which we have categorized based on fuel emission sector data from the most detailed, recent data SBC could identify from the World Resource Institute in 2016.

This initiative from Startup Basecamp aims to support founders by giving them access to networking and exposure opportunities that help them to scale and finance their climate tech solutions.

Founded: 2019 – Lausanne, CH

Founders: Nicolas Weber, Dominik Blaser & Jonas Roch

Elevator Pitch: Voltiris combines crop growth and energy sustainability with innovative solar modules that allow greenhouses to produce electricity without reducing crop yields. Their technology enables greenhouse owners to maximize land use and achieve energy sustainability by generating electricity from the unused spectrum of sunlight.

Problem they solve: Greenhouses are essential for sustainable food supply but have high energy demands due to heating and artificial lighting. This leads to significant carbon footprints. Governments, retailers, and consumers are pushing for greener solutions to reduce these emissions. Voltiris addresses this issue by enabling the dual use of greenhouse surfaces for both agriculture and solar energy production.

Impact: Voltiris’ solar modules help reduce the carbon footprint of greenhouses by producing renewable energy without compromising agricultural productivity. This innovation supports sustainable agriculture and energy practices, contributing to the global efforts to combat climate change and promote sustainability in food production. By allowing greenhouses to generate their own electricity, Voltiris helps reduce dependency on non-renewable energy sources, fostering a cleaner and greener future.
