5 Climate tech startups to watch April week 2

The Climate Tech Startups to Watch This Month: April Week 2

April Week 2, 2023: In this monthly series, we highlight 5 climate tech startups to watch by featuring the incredible startups, companies, or projects that are leading the fight against the climate crisis.

Each month, we add these startups to our running list, which we have categorized based on fuel emission sector data from the most detailed, recent data SBC could identify from the World Resource Institute in 2016.

This initiative from Startup Basecamp aims to support founders by giving them access to networking and exposure opportunities that help them to scale and finance their climate tech solutions.

Quino Energy climate tech startup battery solution
Image: quinoenergy.com/about

Founded:
2021 – San Leandro, CA, USA

Founders:
Eugene Beh and Meisam Bahari

Elevator Pitch:
We create water-based flow batteries that store electrical energy in organic quinone molecules for commercial and grid applications.

Problem they solve:
Quino Energy’s process converts dyestuff raw materials directly into high-performance designer quinones using the flow battery system itself as the production reactor, enabling a new chemistry without a new factory while creating zero chemical waste.

Impact:
Renewables and electrical storage are essential for the deep decarbonization of the global economy. Quino Energy is developing a redox flow battery targeted for 8 – 24 hours of energy storage, a segment for which no suitable battery technology has yet been commercialized.

Stage:
Seed

Founded:
2019 – Sydney, Australia

Founders:
Christiaan Jordaan and Andrew Minett

Elevator Pitch:
Sicona has pioneered a simple & robust production process for high-performance silicon-graphite composite anode and polymer binder materials.

Problem they solve:
Sicona develops next-generation battery materials technology used in the anodes (negative electrodes) of lithium-ion (“Li-ion”) batteries that enable electric-mobility and storage of renewable energy. Sicona is commercialising an innovative silicon-composite battery anode technology, developed and perfected over the last ten years at the Australian Institute for Innovative Materials (AIIM). Sicona’s current generation silicon-composite anode technology delivers 50% to 100% higher capacity than conventional graphite anodes and its anode materials can deliver more than 50% higher cell energy density than current Li-ion batteries.

Impact:
Sicona’s technology makes it easy and cost effective to produce the final battery anode material, using off the shelf equipment and without the use of expensive silicon nanowires.

Stage:
Seed
