The Climate Tech Startups to Watch This Month: July Week 1

July Week 1, 2023: In this monthly series, we highlight 5 climate tech startups to watch by featuring the incredible startups, companies, or projects that are leading the fight against the climate crisis.

Each month, we add these startups to our running list, which we have categorized based on fuel emission sector data from the most detailed, recent data SBC could identify from the World Resource Institute in 2016.

This initiative from Startup Basecamp aims to support founders by giving them access to networking and exposure opportunities that help them to scale and finance their climate tech solutions.

Energy use in Industry and Buildings

Image: flexality.de

Founded:
2022 – Bremen, Germany

Founders:
Dyke Wilke

Elevator Pitch:
We enable energy flexibility for the industry.

Problem they solve:

Electricity prices will develop very dynamically in 2022. In extreme cases, new contracts mean twice as high costs. Reporting requirements for avoided emissions are the main challenges for industry worldwide.

Impact:
Coldstore warehouse posses large potentials to support the transformation of our energy supply. fleXality offers insights and expert knowledge, how you can leverage fluctuating power prices and how to optimize your operations towards a greener and cost efficient future. With fleXality, you can save up to 15% on the energy costs of your refrigeration in a smart and data-driven manner — and within a very short time.

Founded:
2019 – Oakland, CA, USA

Founders:  Olya Irzak

Elevator Pitch:
A company working to combat runaway climate change by deploying remote methane destruction devices.

Problem they solve:
Unprecedented increasing rate of global warming primarily due to the accumulation of CO2 and methane the atmosphere.
Methane is responsible for 20% of the warming and is 28x more potent than CO2 per molecule.

Impact:
Frost Methane pays land owners, mineral rights owners, and farmers who deploy our turnkey, methane management solutions at their sites. Our proven technology neutralizes methane from manure ponds, abandoned coal mines, and landfills, which earns carbon offset revenue that we share with our customers.

Founded:
2019 – Reutlingen, Germany

Founders:
Mexson Fernandes, Jorge Mendes and Francesca Rubbiani

Elevator Pitch:
Reducing buildings’ carbon footprint with Energy AI.

Problem they solve:
Energy waste from inefficient buildings. Building energy efficiency is expensive, invasive and ineffective. Expensive technology 3X costs for building hardware sensors. No efficiency 75% buildings over consume energy. Heavy Emission 33% of global carbon footprint is by buildings. Rising energy demand 65% rise in building energy demand by 2050.

Impact:
Preflet Energy AI Platform provides attainable actions to improve buildings’ energy efficiency. Our technology harnesses multidimensional data such as smart meter energy, weather, and satellite. We help building owners and property managers to reduce costs and decarbonize building assets while saving energy.

Waste (water & landfills)

Image: spring.co.uk

Founded:
2020 – London, UK

Leadership:
Tom Williams and James Seear

Elevator Pitch:
Changing the way the world consumes technology.

Problem they solve:

The refurbished tech sector is growing, rapidly. The existing firms still haven’t addressed the critical pain points for the customer.
What’s more, the business models remain linear by design; more than 80 per cent of products are neither repaired, nor reused, nor recycled.
In the process we are throwing away rare and finite raw
materials essential to modern electronics, from smartphones to solar panels. Less than one per cent of these resources are recovered.

Impact:
No commitment. No upfront costs. No hassle.
Use tech for as long as you need it.
Prices are linked to real market values and decrease monthly.
Consumers are sensitive to price fluctuations and have
become discerning around technology.
Our belief is that a fair and transparent pricing model will deliver customer adoration, trust, retention and ultimately, product virality.

Cross-cutting enablers

Image: wildmicrobes.com

Founded:
2021 – Cambridge, MA, USA

Founder:
Benjamin Kramer and Timothy Wannier

Elevator Pitch:
We use cutting-edge technology to develop new microbial chasses, making scaling sustainable products faster and cheaper than ever.

Problem they solve:

The Proteins industry runs on 30+ year old microbes…Ingredients, Chemicals and Polymers. Current options lack genetic tools to work in new strains, making it risky and expensive to try.

Impact:
We want to remove destructive products like animal protein and plastics from our supply chain, so we need to make better and cheaper alternatives. We’re using synthetic biology to turn microbes into production factories to make the next-generation of sustainable products.

We’re building a catalog of exceptional microbes. We find the best microbes nature has to offer, building on a billion years of evolution, and harness their innate abilities to make production easier.
