Five climate tech startups to watch and their logos

The Climate Tech Startups to Watch This Month: March Week 4

March Week 4, 2023: In this monthly series, we highlight 5 climate tech startups to watch by featuring the incredible startups, companies, or projects that are leading the fight against the climate crisis.

Each month, we add these startups to our running list, which we have categorized based on fuel emission sector data from the most detailed, recent data SBC could identify from the World Resource Institute in 2016.

This initiative from Startup Basecamp aims to support founders by giving them access to networking and exposure opportunities that help them to scale and finance their climate tech solutions.

Circadian solution 5 climate tech startups to watch
Image: circadian.io

Founded:
2021 – Berlin, Germany

Founders:
Mike Rosenberg and Max Boit

Elevator Pitch:
We help businesses in frontier markets adopt renewable energy. Circadian empowers solar developers to win more projects, reduce operating costs and grow revenue with its SaaS platform and proprietary IoT hardware.

Problem they solve:
IoT that catalyzes renewable energy adoption: The Circadian Cortex Remote Intelligence Hub enables remote load profiles and asset management, driving customer conversion and transforming O&M.

Impact:
Our solution was born of the challenges faced deploying hundreds of Solar & Storage installs from 1 kWh homes to 1 MWh C&I across West, East, and Southern Africa over the past 10 years. By empowering installers, we seek to be the catalyst for the mass adoption of decentralized energy.

Stage:
Seed

Founded:
San Francisco, USA

Founder:
Chris Mui

Elevator Pitch:
Electric Air is building the Tesla of home heating and cooling, with a complete solution of modern heat pump technology, HEPA filtration and direct-to-homeowner purchase and install experience.

Problem they solve:
The air in your home is more than just temperature. The Electric Air thermostat measures PM2.5 particulate and CO2 in the air, triggering filtration and fresh air intake to deliver healthier air for you and your family. Humidity monitoring and control means air doesn’t leave you sweaty in the summer, or too dry in the winter.‍

Optional energy optimization features work to lower your monthly bill by integrating with the grid, your time-of-use electricity rate plan, and the weather.

Impact:
Electric Air is accelerating the adoption of residential heat pumps through improved product design.

Stage:
Pre-seed

Founded:
2021 – Edmonton, Canada

Founders:
Andrew Gillis and Erin Bobicki

Elevator Pitch:
Aurora Hydrogen is developing the next generation of hydrogen production technology

Problem they solve:
At present, hydrogen is primarily produced by the steam reforming of natural gas, which results in the production of CO2. With hydrogen demand expected to increase dramatically, there is an urgent need to develop new low-cost and low-carbon technologies for hydrogen production.

Impact:
Aurora Hydrogen is developing a technology that uses efficient microwave energy to heat natural gas in the absence of oxygen and water (pyrolysis) to produce hydrogen and solid carbon while avoiding the generation of CO2. The technology is highly scalable and modular, units can be installed anywhere there is natural gas and electricity. Hydrogen production using Aurora’s technology has the potential to reduce global CO2 emissions by over 500 million tonnes per year.

Stage:
Series A

Watercycle technologies 5 climate tech startups to watch
Image: www.watercycletechnologies.com

Founded:
2020 – Manchester, UK

Founder:
Sebastian Leaper and Ahmed Abdelkarim

Elevator Pitch:
Watercycle Technologies has developed advanced membranes and innovative filtration systems for the production of valuable minerals and clean water

Problem they solve:
Able to treat highly concentrated water, its core technology spans mineral extraction, concentration, and crystallisation. This is initially being utilised for primary lithium production from sub-surface waters and industrial brines. In addition, the company is specialising in the recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries, which is essential for enabling the transition towards a Circular Economy.

Impact:
A critical element of the transition to Net Zero is the electrification of transport and the use of lithium-ion batteries.

Our direct lithium extraction and crystallisation (DLEC) technology can sustainably, and cost effectively produce lithium carbonate to supply this accelerating transition, improving the environmental credentials of industry participants.
